RESUMEN:

Se ha propuesto múltiples definiciones para el término parálisis cerebral. Tal denominación se utiliza con mayor frecuencia para identificar aquellas personas incapacitadas por deficiencias motoras. Estas deficiencias son causadas por alteraciones no progresivas del cerebro, aparecidas en fases precoces de la vida.

La parálisis cerebral fue por primera vez descrita en el siglo XIX. El médico Británico William Little (1853) reconoció que las anormalidades motoras de algunos bebes estaban relacionados a un embarazo anormal, parto difícil, nacimiento prematuro y asfixia. También reconoció la permanencia de la discapacidad y sus asociaciones con las deficiencias intelectuales, cambios en la personalidad (irritabilidad, trato temperamental) y epilepsia (Kolb y Whishaw, 1996
